They were my favorite pair of earrings for two reasons: first, because my sister Cynthia had given them to me. Secondly, because of their beautiful spiritual significance.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus earrings were lightweight with silver etched hearts hanging in the center of the larger brass hoop circles. And with the mixed colors they easily matched my jewelry selections to pair with outfits.
I loved learning the significance of them with my sister’s growing Catholic faith. But I especially loved wearing the earrings as a constant reminder to always keep my ears attuned to Jesus’s heart and God’s leading and direction for my life.
One day after a trip, while unpacking my suitcase and in particular my jewelry case I was discouraged to find one of these special earrings missing. The frantic search for the lost earring ensued. But no matter how much I looked, I could not find the missing item. Sadly, I gave up the search and resolved that it was lost! But told the Lord if He knew where it was, He could find it for me and restore it to me. I forgot about that prayer.
Three months later, that prayer was answered: unexpectedly. Lifting a necklace off the jewelry stand in my master closet and draping it on, I found the missing earring entangled in the chain. Baffled, I didn’t know how the earring had ended up in that particular chain as I had not worn it on that trip. I quickly rejoiced that God had restored my lost treasure.
Like the parable in Luke 15 about the woman who loses a coin and searches diligently until it is found, God seeks lost souls far more diligently than the woman searching for her coin or me searching for the special lost earring. He values people far more than worldly possessions and the parable points to God’s heart.
And in His perfect timing, He seeks and restores what is lost until it is found: like valuable people. But like the good Father, He delights in answering prayer to a little earring. He’s in the restoration business all the way around.
Beloved:
I know how much you value a priceless artifact or piece of jewelry. I know how important the little things in your life are. And how much more do I value the souls of men. Continue to entrust your loved ones to My care: every detail in their lives and your life. Even a lost earring matters to Me beloved. And I’m in the restoration business of souls and things!
“I have come to seek and save that which is lost.” (Luke 19:10)
“Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one...she searches carefully until it is found... ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, there is rejoicing...over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15: 8-10)
“I will restore to you…” (Joel 2:25)
Love this. I’m praying as He keeps His eye on me He will help me find what is lost. El Roi.
